Triple Play, BGCA’s first comprehensive health and wellness program, developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, strives to improve the overall health of Club members ages 6-18 by increasing their daily physical activity, teaching them good nutrition and helping them develop healthy relationships.
The Mind component encourages young people to eat smart through the Healthy Habits program, which covers the power of choice, calories, vitamins and minerals, the food pyramid and appropriate portion size. The Body component boosts Clubs’ traditional physical activities to a higher level by providing sports and fitness activities for all youth. Body programs include six Daily Fitness Challenges; teen Sports Clubs focused on leadership development, service and careers in athletics; and Triple Play Games Tournaments, inter-Club sectional tournaments that involve multiple team sports. The Soul component helps build positive relationships and cooperation among young people.
Designed to incorporate healthy living and active learning in every part of the Club experience; Healthy Habits emphasizes good nutrition, regular physical activity and improving overall well-being. The program, for ages 6 to 15, is the Mind component of Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul.
Chefs in Training is program designed for member’s ages 7-9. The goal of the program is to heighten their knowledge and experience in the kitchen. Each week we will focus on different topics surrounding the kitchen: kitchen safety, proper measuring, healthy eating habits, baking and fun!
Mother Hens is a program designed for girls ages 9-11. This program is exclusively for girls who are looking to hang out, have fun and try something new. Each week will focus on creating different types of crafts, baking and team building activities. The goal of this program is for girl members to have a safe, fun and positive place to express themselves, meet new friends and build lasting friendships and leadership skills through art and creativity.
Trip Around the World is a program to help promote healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and creativity. This program will be available for members ages 9-12 and will be one hour and 15 minute long classes. Each week members will have a different country to focus on (Italy, Ireland, Germany, Asia, Mexico, Caribbean islands Greece etc). The classes will start off with an educational component of basic information about the country; its traditions, culture, food and natural resources. For the remaining hour we will focus on the cooking aspect. Here we will focus on what foods to purchase at the super market, budgeting, fresh food vs. frozen food, nutrition, measurements, fractions, and the endless opportunities and conversations that can form around cooking.
Teen Cooking is a program designed for middle school members. The goal of the program is to heighten their knowledge of leading a healthy lifestyle and the fundamentals of cooking. Teen Cooking is the “Mind” component of the Triple Play program. This program is designed to teach youth about the benefits of developing healthy habits such as eating smart and being physically active; enhance their skills to adopt healthier habits by participating in fun and engaging learning activities both at the Club and at home. We will be working along side of a Natural Chef who will be volunteering their time to the Club.
